Abstract

The objective of this paper is to examine the reasons responsible for the lack of development in Nigeria. The paper identified some salient impediments to development in Nigeria which includes; poor governance, corruption, insecurity, unemployment and high fertility rate. The paper further deliberated the centrality of politics as an obstacle to development in Nigeria. The paper brought out how a focused political leadership can bring about development. The ability of the political leadership in China to develop her country is brought to bear. Chinese leaders are known to have over time come up with conscious programs and policies that amounted to the development of the country. The paper therefore recommends the need to entrench good leadership in Nigeria. That it is only such leadership that can utilize the abundant human and material resources the country is endowed with to develop.
