Abstract

This study investigates the perceived impact of generative artificial intelligence on career counselling practices and self-efficacy of counsellors in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This study explores how counsellors perceive the benefits of using generative AI in their practices and its impacts on their self-efficacy. The study adopted descriptive survey research design involving the use of questionnaire titled ‘Generative AI Impact Questionnaire’ to collect data. Two research questions, two objectives and two research hypotheses tested at 0.05 levels of significance guided the conduct of the study. The population consisted of approximately 520 counsellors in the 14 public universities and 13 public colleges of education in the North-Central, Nigeria. A sample of 212 counsellors was randomly selected from 18 selected public institutions (7 universities and 7 colleges of Education) in Nigeria. The data collected were analysed using means, standard deviation and t-test. The findings of the study revealed that many counsellors do not utilise artificial intelligence in their career counselling practices and counsellors who utilizes generative AI in their counselling engagements reported high perceived impact compared to those who do not use it. It is recommended that professional counsellor in tertiary institution should be exposed to training through workshops and conferences on the utilisation of generative artificial intelligence in career counselling engagements with students.
