THE PSYCHOTHEOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF SARTORIAL BEHAVIOR: AN ANALYSIS OF MODESTY, SELF-ESTEEM, AND SECULAR ACCULTURATION AMONG CHRISTIAN WOMEN IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigates the complex psychotheological dimensions of sartorial behavior among Christian women in contemporary Nigeria, operating at the dynamic intersection of rigid ecclesiastical modesty mandates, deeply entrenched patriarchal traditions, and rapid secular acculturation. By synthesizing Social Identity Theory and Sanctification Theory, the paper critically analyzes how dress functions simultaneously as an internal group social signifier and a sacred, embodied sacrament. The research highlights a profound Sartorial Paradox, wherein the female body is paradoxically revered as a divine temple yet pathologized as a primary locus of moral temptation and spiritual danger. By exploring the inherent tension between traditional biblical hermeneutics of modesty and modern, globalized beauty paradigms, the analysis reveals starkly dualistic psychological outcomes concerning self esteem. When modest attire is enforced through rigorous institutional surveillance, bodily policing, and public shaming, women frequently experience harmful self objectification, chronic anxiety, and significantly diminished self worth. Conversely, when modesty is embraced through autonomous sanctification, internalizing the body as a sacred space free from punitive external pressures, it acts as a protective shield that fosters profound psychological resilience, spiritual agency, and robust global self esteem. Ultimately, the study recommends empathetic clinical interventions and contextual theological reengineering to actively dismantle harmful structures of ecclesiastical surveillance, thereby empowering women to navigate modern secularism while authentically preserving their psychological health and foundational spiritual identities.
